You will reply that you do JDM and people will ask you what JDM means. You will say \u201cjudgment and decision making\u201d and then they will ask you what that means. At this point you may realize that you are not really sure.<\/p>\n<p>To help you construct an answer, here are some thoughts about what JDM is and what it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3>MY FAVORITE CONCISE DEFINITION<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe study of intuitive statistics.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>A LONGER DEFINITION<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe study of human decision making behavior, formal decision models, and the differences between the two.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>STATED DEFINITIONS<\/h3>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/www.sjdm.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">SJDM website<\/a> (full disclosure, I am a long-time co-webmaster there and may have had a hand in this <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/sjdm.org\/\">definition statement<\/a>) the Society\u2019s focus is<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cis an interdisciplinary academic organization dedicated to the study of normative, descriptive, and prescriptive theories of judgments and decisions. Its members include psychologists, economists, organizational researchers, decision analysts, and other decision researchers.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the Center for Decision Sciences at Columbia University (full disclosure, I used to work there and may have had a hand in this definition statement):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTheory and research in the decision sciences has followed two paths: The first is normative or prescriptive, focused on specifying criteria for evaluating decisions and providing algorithms for achieving optimal outcomes; the second is descriptive, focusing on how people actually make decisions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Jon Baron in a chapter entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/www.sas.upenn.edu\/~baron\/papers\/normative.pdf\">Normative Models of Judgment and Decision Making<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe study of judgment and decision making (JDM) is traditionally concerned with the comparison of judgments to standards, standards that allow evaluation of the judgments as better or worse. I use the term \u2018judgments\u2019 to include decisions, which are judgments about what to do. The major standards come from probability theory, utility theory,\u00a0 and statistics. These are mathematical theories or \u2018models\u2019 that allow us to evaluate a judgment.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In plain language, all three definitions emphasize that JDM research describes how people decide and <em>compares decision making to objective standards<\/em>. These standards do not have to be what is supposedly correct, as we will discuss later.<\/p>\n<h3>DOES THE DIFFRENCE BETWEEN JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING REALLY MATTER?<\/h3>\n<p>Judgments (like estimating the distance of an object or the population of a country), and decisions (like choosing medical treatment A vs B given available information and risks) are different, but they\u2019re so related that I find it convenient to roll everything up into \u2018decision making\u2019. \u00a0Above, Jon Baron rolls everything up into \u2018judgment\u2019. Oh well. In any case JDM or \u201cjudgment and decision making\u201d is now a fixed phrase and there\u2019s not much talk about the distinction between judgments and decisions.<\/p>\n<p>In mainstream use, \u201cbehavioral economics\u201d is a synonym for JDM. But if we dig into it, \u201cbehavioral economics\u201d can refer to three areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Experimental economics, in which economists run psychology experiments (no deception, monetary stakes, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Theoretical economics in which economists prove theorems about \u2018psychological\u2019 agents<\/li>\n<li>Judgment and decision making, the kind you see at the SJDM conference and in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/journal.sjdm.org\/\">Judgment and Decision Making<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>IS JDM THE STUDY OF COGNITIVE BIASES?<\/h3>\n<p>No. A bias is the difference between a behavior and a model of what that behavior should be or what is supposedly correct. JDM research doesn\u2019t need to compare behavior to what it <em>should<\/em> be. Furthermore, comparing behavior to \u201ccorrect\u201d norms can be short-sighted as norms are subjective and constantly evolving. For instance, it used to be considered normatively incorrect to violate expected value. But demonstrations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Petersburg_paradox\">St. Petersburg Paradox<\/a> caused people to appreciate that expected value is not a reasonable norm. Instead of insisting that everyone was biased, thinkers like Daniel Bernoulli changed the norm. Now we don\u2019t think of it as a bias to go against expected value and have turned our attention to describing the risky choices people take with models like <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prospect_theory\" rel=\"noopener\">Prospect Theory<\/a> and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, studies showing that organisms exhibit near <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01780.x\">optimal<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/abs\/10.1086\/409852\">\u00a0decision behavior<\/a> (i.e., no deviation from a norm on average) are clearly JDM studies, even though they don\u2019t identify biases.<\/p>\n<h3>WHAT FIELDS DO JDM RESEARCHERS COME FROM?<\/h3>\n<p>JDM lies at the intersection of mathematical psychology and economics. From its origins, it has been centrally concerned with the comparison of human decisions with normative models of decision making, mostly those from economics. One might object that JDM researchers often come from management, marketing, and accounting, too. True, but those are really subfields of economics that have branched out on their own. The early notable JDMers were mathematical and cognitive psychologists who were finding fault in the prevailing economic model. Amos Tversky was a mathematical psychologist and Daniel Kahneman was a perception researcher when the field took off. Clyde Coombs, Ward Edwards, Dave Krantz and Robyn Dawes all had <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=EeafAgAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA76#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">mathematical psychology affiliations at Michigan<\/a>. Lola Lopes credits cognitive psychology for <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/www.luc.edu\/media\/lucedu\/quinlan-risk\/pdfs\/Lopes-Final.pdf\">shaping her thinking<\/a>. Gerd Gigerenzer wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Nonmetrische_Multidimensionale_Skalierun.html?id=JiIinQAACAAJ\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Messung_und_Modellbildung_in_der_Psychol.html?id=_-jFAAAACAAJ\">theses<\/a> on mathematical psychology. The list of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/sjdm.org\/history.html\">SJDM past presidents<\/a> comprises mostly cognitive psychologists. Core JDM research is about formal models (or standards as Baron calls them) including risk, utility, uncertainty, probability, and logic, which are core topics in economics and mathematical psychology. \u00a0Social psychology, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/social%20psychology\" rel=\"noopener\">defined as<\/a> \u201cthe study of the manner in which the personality, attitudes, motivations, and behavior of the individual influence and are influenced by social groups\u201d, is clearly something else.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 340px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225im_\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/sjdm_more.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"463\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Words that are much more common in decision-making than in social psychology (Rate per 10,000 words)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 340px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/spsp_more.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225im_\/https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/spsp_more.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Words that are much more common in social psychology than in decision-making (Rate per 10,000 words)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The differences are apparent when you compare the kinds of topics studied (as judged by word frequencies in a JDM conference program and a social psychology conference called <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170905213225\/http:\/\/www.spsp.org\/\">Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP)<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t to say there isn\u2019t an intersection between JDM and social psychology. Many social psychologists are interested in Judgment and Decision Making. There\u2019s an active JDM pre-conference at a massive social psychology conference called SPSP. Group decision making, for example is a growing topic within JDM that surely fits in as social psychology topic.
