{"id":4069,"date":"2013-06-21T23:52:03","date_gmt":"2013-06-22T03:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/?p=4069"},"modified":"2013-06-22T11:57:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-22T15:57:20","slug":"subway-riders-quirks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/?p=4069","title":{"rendered":"Subway riders&#8217; quirks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TRAIN OF DECISIONS<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/sw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4179\" alt=\"sw\" src=\"http:\/\/www.decisionsciencenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/sw.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The New York Times reports on a report, written by the MTA, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/16\/nyregion\/subway-riders-quirks-studied.html\">about the decisions of subway riders<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now, the daily seating calculations of subway riders have been recorded for academic use, as part of an observational study conducted by researchers of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.trb.org\/prp\/13-1693.pdf\">A draft of their report<\/a>, published on the Web site of the Transportation Research Board, drew on data collected over three weeks in late winter 2012.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s full of gems, such as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCustomers do change seats as seats become available due to passengers disembarking,\u201d the report said, in language riders would be unlikely to use: \u201cbut seat-change maneuvers incur utility costs (movement effort, and risk of desired seat becoming occupied midmaneuver).\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>When a subway car has more passengers than seats, the study found that an average of 10 percent or more of the seats were not taken.
