ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON SPECIFIC VARIABLES AND CODING "PN" is anonymous participant number. In Experiment 2, only participants with uneven PN were asked to provide confidence ratings. '-99' indicates a missing value (i.e., when sampling was truncated earlier than the maximum number of advice or when P's were not asked to provide confidence ratings). "currenttrial" indicates advice distance, with uneven numbers for close and even numbers for distant advice. "DishName"s are in German. Ccorresponding pictures as presented to participants during the experiments can be obtained from the authors. "Comments" are not translated. None of the participants raised suspicion concerning the variation of advice distance or the relation between either sampling and advice utilization or distance and advice utilization (although some participants were suspicious with regard to the "artificial nature" of advice). "Knowledge" was one item at the end of the experiment, asking whether participants had any experience in estimating the caloric content of food. This variable was not recorded properly in Experiment 2 due to programming failure.
