Descriptions of variables for Experiment 3 of Miller, DeKay, Stone, and Sorenson, JDM 2013 MOST OF THESE VARIABLES WERE NOT USED IN THE ANALYSES, BECAUSE INFORMATION DISTORTION WAS NOT ASSESSED (THERE WAS NO CONTROL CONDITION). There is no key to say which items appeared in which serial positions, because we never used that information. We paid attention only to which gamble was favored by the first item, as indicated at the end of the variable list. But we define all of the variables here anyway. Most variables are in alphabetical order rather than the order in which they were actually collected. AB, CD, EF, and GH are the four gamble pairs. "Skip" at the end of a variable name reflects a workaround for randomizing item order in MediaLab. A participant will have a value for the skip version of a variable or the normal (non-skip) version of that variable, but not both. "White" means a white ticket, which was the Probability of neither Winning nor Losing item. It was always the last item evaluated (Item 5). Missing data = blank cell. Variable Longer variable name Description and possible values ID Subject Subject number. The specific numbers have no meaning. Cond Condition Condition. 1 = No Progress Questions (so many other variable values are missing), 2 = Standard Experimental ABALC AB_AmtLossConf Confidence in the current leader, after the Amount to Lose item for gamble pair AB. 50 to 100 in increments of 5.
