Key for Pretest 1. Condition FA1 - Female, Actual Self First, Order 1 FA2 - Female, Actual Self First, Order 2 (reverse of Order 1) FI1 - Female, Ideal Self First, Order 1 FI2 - Female, Ideal Self First, Order 2 MA1 - Male, Actual Self First, Order 1 MA2 - Male, Actual Self First, Order 2 MI1 - Male, Ideal Self First, Order 1 MI2 - Male, Ideal Self First, Order 2 2. Actual vs. Ideal self questions Q1-Q31 are either actual or ideal self for the 31 scenarios, Q32-Q62 are the other (e.g., ideal if actual was first). 3. Approval Q1a - Q31b are the approval ratings of each of the options for each scenario. 4. Physical safety ratings Q1i - Q31ii lists the physical safety ratings of reach of the options for each scenario. 5. Risk ratings R1-R31 lists which of the options entails more risk. 6. Recoded variables: Because participants responded to the items in different orders, we needed to recode them to match the response per scenario. We ended with .... helmet - alarm: Actual self responses for each of these scenarios. ihelmet - ialarm: Ideal self responses for each of these scenarios. 7. For some of the items "a" was risk-averse and for other items "a" was risk-taking. Thus, we recoded the items so that "1" was always risk taking and "0" was always risk averse. r_helmet - r_alarm: Actual self responses for each of the scenarios (0=risk averse; 1=risk taking) r_ihelmet - r_ialarm: Ideal self responses for each of the scenarios (0=risk averse; 1=risk taking) 8. Approval ratings: These were recoded so that each scenario had a rating for the risk-averse action and for the risk-taking action. The approval rating for the risk-averse action is denoted in the variable name by "ra" and the approval rating for the risk-taking action is denoted in the variable name by "rt." ra_team - rt_key 9. Physical safety ratings: These were recoded so that each scenario had a rating for the risk-averse action and for the risk-taking action. The physical safety rating for the risk-averse action is denoted in the variable name by "sra" and the physical safety rating for the risk-taking action is denoted in the varible name by "srt." sra_team - srt_key 10. Risk ratings: For each scenario, we thought one of the possible actions entailed more risk than the other possible action. To verify this assumption, we had participants state which of the actions entailed more risk. When the action that we expected to have more risk was seen as having more risk, this was scored as "1." When the action that we thought would have less risk was seen as having more risk, this was coded as "0." rc_team - rc_key 11. Composite scores: The remainder of the variables are composites of the individual scenario responses. These are described in the variable labels.
